The answer, as almost always seems to be the case, is "Yes, but maybe not in that way." In this case, I think the Inkscape way is less intuitive but more straight-forward, if such a thing is possible. This tutorial was made in response to a question about using Inkscape to accomplish the effects seen in the Illustrator tutorial ( ).
